?쁏urr-paring??your kitty for adventure
Allowing your cat to have safe outdoor experiences is a great way to enrich your kitty?셲 life and let him exercise his natural instincts. However, there are a few things you should know before you head out the door ??especially if this is your cat?셲 first time donning a leash and harness.
First, not all kitties are the outdoor-adventuring sort. Some may be skittish around people, or they may simply prefer lounging in the sun. It all has to do with your cat?셲 personality ??probably the most important thing you?셪l need to take into account before committing to the adventure cat lifestyle.
If your cat is highly valiant and seems up for the challenge, the first step is getting him used to a harness. It can take time for cats to adapt to new things, so now?셲 the time to start with leash training, making sure to reward your cat with treats throughout the process. When the time comes to try on the harness, make sure your cat is comfortable (you should be able to fit your finger under it easily). Don?셳 be discouraged if your cat reacts negatively to the harness the first time you put it on her. It?셲 a new sensation for your cat, so he?셪l need some time to get used to it.
Practice with the leash indoors before taking your cat outside, and when it?셲 time to venture out, always carry your leashed cat out the door to discourage door dashing in the future. Start in an empty, quiet place (a backyard is purrfect), and let your kitty run the show. While you?셱e outside, stay with your cat and keep a close eye on his body language to ensure your cat is comfortable.
Ready to hit the trail?
Before you take your cat on an adventure, make sure you can answer ?쐙es??to the following questions.
- Has your cat had a recent veterinary checkup and been given the go ahead to adventure?
- Is your cat up to date on vaccinations and flea, tick and heartworm treatments?
- Is your cat microchipped and have a collar and ID tags?
- Have you packed all the essentials?
- Are cats allowed at your destination?
- Are your plans right for a kitty companion? (While your cat may enjoy a casual stroll through nature, he?셝 probably rather stay home if you?셱e planning a long, strenuous hike.)

Is your kitty not the outdoor-adventuring type? That?셲 OK!
While some cats will easily take to a leash and love exploring the world outside the windows, some cats may never be comfortable with leash walking due to age, personality or lifestyle. But that doesn?셳 mean your kitty can?셳 adventure.
There are numerous ways you can enrich your indoor kitty?셲 life with interactive toys, puzzle feeders, hidey boxes and clicker training. Learn more about how you can bring the adventure inside.
